Licensing: Did You Know? Videogames
Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 9:07AM The average royalty rate for licensed videogames and software dropped more than 6% from 2008 to 2009, according to "The Licensing Letter Royalty Trends Report." In 2008, videogames and software fetched an average royalty rate of 11.3%. In 2009, the average royalty rate dropped to 10.6%.
The value of retail sales for licensed videogames and software-based licensed merchandise was estimated at $3.89 billion in 2009, according to "The Licensing Letter Royalty Trends Report." That $3.89 billion accounts for 4.2% of licensed merchandise retail sales in 2009 in the U.S. and Canada. This data was derived from The Licensing Letter’s Annual Licensing Business Survey.
In further analysis, the report says film- and sports-based properties draw higher than average rates.
